Downtown East / North Loop Master Plan

Minneapolis, MN

2004 AWARD FOR AN OUTSTANDING PLAN
American Planning Association, Minnesota

HKGi co-led a consultant team that developed the Master Plan for Downtown East and North Loop, two areas flanking Minneapolis' Central Business District. HKGi assisted with the land use planning portion of the study and the firm's urban designers also developed a plan that will help foster the pedestrian-oriented environment necessary to carve vibrant, mixed-use neighborhoods out of the redeveloped study area.

At the time the master plan was completed, redevelopment in the North Loop neighborhood had begun. By identifying the future location of a new Twins stadium, which later opened as Target Field, the master plan acted as a catalyst for accelerated redevelopment in the North Loop.

Redevelopment efforts in the Downtown East neighborhood were far less advanced at the time of the master plan, but the plan did provide the City with the land use and development framework needed to create a vibrant transit-oriented, pedestrian-friendly neighborhood that made room for business, residential, and entertainment-based development to occur. The master plan set the stage for new development, which has since taken root throughout the area, while also preserving the historic residential, mixed use, mixed income neighborhoods at the edge of the downtown.
