HKGi, working as a sub-contractor to engineering firm Bolton and Menk, Inc., was responsible for route alternative analysis, design development, and construction documents for a one mile trail segment to complete the River to River Greenway (formerly known as the North Urban Regional Trail) in Dakota County and is now in the process of developing a master plan update for the entire 8 mile trail.

Travelling through a densely developed suburban corridor in Mendota Heights and West St. Paul, the River to River Greenway is a multi-use trail that connects the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers. HKGi’s work on design development and final construction design for the one mile segment focused on landscape, trail amenities, and trailheads. Trail designs address the core elements of Dakota County’s Greenway system: water quality, habitat, recreation, nonmotorized transportation, and cultural and natural resource interpretation.

This project was controversial and public and stakeholder engagement were essential to community support of the proposed trail. Because the trail travels on school district property and through a private nature center, careful attention was paid to minimizing impacts and adding site amenities and restoration desired by stakeholders.
